UNGROUND

UNGROUND is a kinetic typographic light installation built around the letters of the German word ORDNUNG (“order”). The letters remain in constant rotation, repeatedly suggesting unstable combinations, but never settling into the original word. The work reflects a condition of unstable attention and the repeated search for meaning in an atmosphere of permanent updates.

The installation is designed for flexible placement in dimmed interior spaces and can be presented either as a group of projection units aligned on one wall or as a constellation distributed across a larger exhibition environment. During exhibition, viewers observe continuously rotating luminous circles containing letters that repeatedly seem about to form readable combinations, yet never arrive at stable order. Technical Rider

Core Components

The installation includes three projection units in the standard version. Each unit includes:

• one modified LED projection unit based on a gobo projector housing
• one transparent rotating capsule with fabricated letters
• internal motor and cooling components
• cabling and power adapter

Optional extension to a fourth unit is possible.

Dimensions / Duration / Scalability

• Recommended distance from projection surface: approx. 250 to 400 cm, depending on desired scale
• Recommended wall width for a linear arrangement: up to approx. 600 cm
• The installation can also be distributed across different locations within one exhibition
• A near-perpendicular angle to the projection surface is strongly recommended
• Ceiling suspension, elevated mounting, or floor-based positioning may be possible if the angle remains close to 90 degrees
• Continuous operation during opening hours

Spatial Requirements

• A dim or darkened room is strongly recommended
• Projection surface should be light-colored, evenly painted, and visually calm
• The work benefits from corridor-like or directed viewing situations, but can also be adapted to open exhibition layouts
• Dry, stable indoor conditions are required
• Strong competing light sources should be reduced as much as possible

Technical Requirements Provided by Venue

• 220 V / 50 Hz power supply, Schuko
• Approx. 60 W power demand per unit
• Dark-colored power strip with sufficient outputs for the final number of projection units
• Sufficient socket spacing is recommended because the DC power adapters require additional physical space
• One technician or installation assistant from the venue is strongly recommended during setup

Components Provided by Artist

• Modified LED projection units
• Rotating capsules with fabricated letters
• Connection cables and adapters
• Mounting or standing accessories
• Basic setup and alignment tools
• One digital timer for setup or scheduled operation

The original projection units are based on ADJ Icon GS housings, internally modified to operate with 12 V LED, fan, and related DC components for safer and more stable long-term use.

Sound

The artwork does not include sound and can be installed close to works with sound, provided the projection remains visually legible.

Safety

• Projection units must be securely positioned and protected against accidental contact
• Cables should be routed safely and taped down where necessary
• Visitors should not have direct access to rotating internal components

Transport

• One transport box containing up to 4 projection units measures approx. 40 x 60 x 60 cm and weighs up to approx. 8 kg
• Optical, light, and mechanical components should be handled with care

Setup / Deinstallation

• Approximate setup time: 4 to 6 hours depending on room conditions
• Focus, spacing, and projection alignment should be set on site
• Venue assistance is required if the installation involves elevated placement or routed power lines

Daily Operation

• Daily visual inspection of projector operation is recommended
• Projector position should be verified if the public passes close to the work
• Scheduled switching on and off may be organized via digital timers
• One timer can be provided by the artist; additional timers may need to be provided by the venue or included in production costs

Maintenance

• The work is intended as a low-maintenance light installation
• Periodic checks of focus, motor function, and power distribution are recommended
• For longer exhibition durations, occasional technical inspection should be planned

Production / Adaptation Note

The current installation requires additional fabrication and adaptation for a long-term exhibition version, including upgraded capsules, replacement cooling fans, replacement motors, timers, and spare LED-related components. Estimated additional production for a durable long-term setup should be discussed separately depending on the final exhibition constellation.

Insurance Value

• Modified projection units: approx. EUR 200 each
• Internal capsules with letters: approx. EUR 50 each
• Spare LED and cooling components: to be discussed depending on final version
• Final insurance value should be confirmed once the final number of units is fixed
