PNCTM
PNCTM is an interactive multimedia installation that reanimates historical diaslides through AI and generative tools, creating a reflective dialogue about the impermanence and malleability of memory. The installation consists of three compact frame boxes in which archival slides are placed over small high-definition screens. Dynamic image sequences, soft sound textures, and magnifying lenses transform each box into a focused viewing station.
Leaning toward the small object, the visitor uses a compact magnifying lens to look through an analogue slide and into an animated action unfolding beneath and around it. Digital pixels interpret, extend, and disturb the photographic memory carrier, while the viewer becomes part of a larger machine of interpretation: the human eye, the remembered or imagined image, and the artificial interpretation of the source material continuously affect one another. More documentation, images, and video can be found on the project page: slavaromanov.art/2024/PNCTM.
Technical Rider
Core Components
The installation includes three photoboxes. Each photobox contains:
- MDF-made photo frame
- 5-inch FHD photo preview screen, Lilliput A5
- integrated Android media player
- custom casing, cables, transformer, on/off switch, remote receiver, and mounting board
- active air cooling
- archive diaslide and plexiglass surface
Additional core elements include:
- three pre-focused magnifying lenses
- two remote controls for Android media players with batteries
- three 12 V / 3 A adapters
- extension cables for 12 V adapters
- cleaning accessories for plexiglass surfaces
Dimensions / Duration / Scalability
- Each frame box on a stand: approx. 35 x 35 x 120 cm
- Total installation size in a linear arrangement: approx. 250 x 35 x 120 cm
- Duration of each video: approx. 3 minutes, cyclical
- Alternative arrangements for non-standard rooms are possible upon discussion
- The objects can also be distributed across several spaces if this fits the exhibition concept
Spatial Requirements
- Minimum room size for all three frame boxes: approx. 350 x 250 cm
- A separated and enclosed room is highly recommended for intimate and focused interaction
- The room should be completely dark or very well dimmed
- Low-brightness red artificial light will be used for orientation
- A dark curtain or other light trap at the entrance is recommended
- Wall color should be compatible with the red light environment
- The space should be free from high humidity, dirt, and dust
- Acoustic separation from loud neighboring works is recommended
Technical Requirements Provided by Venue
- 220 V / 50 Hz / max. 3 A, Schuko plug system
- Dark-colored power extension with at least 4 plugs
- Three plugs are needed for 12 V / 3 A adapters
- One additional plug may be needed for an optional light source
- Maximum recommended distance of plugs from artwork: approx. 2 m
- Three stable stands, approx. 120 cm high or height-adjustable
- Stands should allow secure attachment of the photoboxes, for example with cable ties or comparable non-invasive fixing
- The magnifying lenses should be secured to the stands with a cord or similar safety solution to prevent falling or accidental removal
Components Provided by Artist
- 3 photoboxes with integrated screens and media players
- Curated archive diaslides
- 3 pre-focused magnifying lenses
- 2 remote controls for Android media players with batteries
- 3 x 12 V / 3 A adapters
- 3 extension cables for 12 V adapters: approx. 2 m, 4 m, and 7 m
- Cleaning accessories for plexiglass surfaces
- Spare plexiglass surfaces may be provided for longer exhibitions and may require a small additional production budget
Sound
The artwork includes a soft sound composition played through small speakers integrated into the HD screens. It requires its own acoustic space to avoid interference from other artworks. Headphones or additional speakers are not suitable for the intended visitor experience.
Light
- Red light sources can be used on location
- White light with a red filter can also be adapted upon discussion
- Red wall washers are recommended
- Light positioning should avoid strong reflections on the glossy surfaces of the photoboxes
Safety
- The photoboxes should be securely attached to the stands while still allowing access to the power switch
- Magnifying lenses must be secured to prevent falling or accidental removal
- The installation should remain protected against accidental movement by visitors
- Periodic supervision by venue staff is recommended during opening hours
Transport
- The artwork is delivered in one standard plastic Eurobox with lid
- Packed dimensions: approx. 60 x 40 x 40 cm
- Packed mass without stands: approx. 7 kg
- The artwork is fragile and must be handled with care
- Transportation should be arranged and covered by the venue unless agreed otherwise
Setup / Deinstallation
- Approximate installation time: up to 6 hours
- The artist can provide on-site installation or detailed setup instructions
- Assistance may be needed for preparing the space, darkening light sources, positioning stands, and enclosing doorways with Molton
Daily Operation
- Daily switching on and off is required unless another operating mode is agreed
- Power should be checked individually for the screens and related components
- Glass covers and magnifying lenses should be cleaned regularly with the provided accessories
- An autostart procedure can be adapted to exhibition requirements
Maintenance
- Regular maintenance includes cleaning of plexiglass covers and magnifying lenses
- Detailed instructions for switching and troubleshooting are available upon request
- For long exhibition periods, periodic checks of screen playback, cooling, and mounting stability are recommended
- Replacement plexiglass surfaces may be useful for longer presentations and can be discussed as a small production cost
Insurance Value
- Photoboxes: EUR 2000 each
- Eurobox packaging: EUR 200
- Total insurance value: EUR 6200
